A letter from me about what I was up to at the end of the summer before my senior year of high school. “Every book in the store, except for some very old or rare ones, is half price, and they have quite a large selection. Also, by being an employee, I get an extra 10% discount.”
A thank-you-and-what-I’m-up-to note from Jay, age 15. “I am training very hard for the San Jose Marathon[…] It will be my first marathon and my only goal is to run the whole way.”
A post-high-school-graduation note from me, along with a thank-you for some luggage. “Here is a picture of me at graduation.”
A thank-you-and-life-update letter from Jay. “I will definitely put the stopwatch to good use—at track meets, when I am not running, the coaches always need extra people to be timers.”
A thank-you-and-sports-update note from Jay, in his senior year of high school. “Thank you very much for the cookies, brownies, and ‘blackberry spread’—I like it much better than normal jelly or jam.”
A thank-you note from Jay about a birthday present. “On my birthday, about 12 friends had a suprise party for me, which was pretty exciting. Now I have to register to vote and for the draft.”
A thank-you and life-update letter from Jay. “I had a great vacation—I went to see the 49ers play the Rams at Anaheim stadium, went skiing for five days in Utah, and went to Arizona to see the Copper Bowl.”
A letter from a relative of Marcy’s, to George and Helen. “I can’t tell you how much I miss Marcie—I really didn’t understand how much a part of my daily living she had become”
Four-page letter from me, a year after I graduated from college. “I’m sorry to take so long to get this note to you—I wanted to sit down at some time when I’d be able to write lots of overdue thank-you notes and letters at once, but if I’d just taken a few minutes for each of them over the last couple of weeks, instead of trying to find one large block of time for all of them, I’d probably be done by now.”
Two-page life-update letter from me. “I’m trying to get into the habit of sending people short notes occasionally to let them know I still exist.”
