If you guessed Gustav Mahler, join the club. I would have too, if I
didn't already know about Hans Rott, who wrote a symphony ten years
before Mahler's 1st which has a few amazing similarities, the most
striking to me being the Canonical-Mahler-Scherzo-Motif which shows
up in Rott's scherzo. The two of them were friends... was it a case
of mutual inspiration, or overt borrowing of ideas -- and of whom by
who?
