Equilibrium gained and lost
Home from WisCon. Tired. It's 11:20 p.m. in Mountain View, but I'm more or less on Central time, so it feels like two hours later.
Equilibrium has been hard to come by lately, but I listened to music in the car on the way home, and that was nice. I sang along with a couple of fun cheerful songs, then came to Vienna Teng's “Lullaby for a Stormy Night” as I neared home. Listened to the last minute or so of it sitting quietly in my driveway. Got out of my car feeling tired and a little sad but more or less at peace.
And then a voice out of the darkness nearby said, loudly, “Hi, Jed!”
I near about jumped out of my skin. I said, “Jesus!” quite a bit too loudly for after 11 p.m. on a weeknight.
It turned out that two neighbors were walking by and thought they would say hello. They apologized for scaring me. I explained that I was tired, and brought my stuff inside, and settled down a little. But I'm still a little jumpy.
