Over the Hedge

After Xmas dinner this evening, Kam and I decided to watch something silly and fluffy, and it just so happened that I had Over the Hedge out from Netflix.

I had seen a couple of previews that left me mildly interested in seeing it; I thought it would be a fun timewaster.

As it turned out, I really enjoyed it. It was fun almost all the way through, and I laughed almost nonstop for the last ten or fifteen minutes. (Kam laughed a lot too, though I'm not sure whether she enjoyed it quite as much as I did.)

It's definitely fluff, and the plot isn't anything terribly unusual. And I'm glad I didn't realize that it was loosely based on the comic strip of the same name, because I've never much enjoyed the comic strip. But I really enjoyed the movie quite a lot.

At the start of the DVD, there was a preview for Flushed Away, after which I remarked that I wasn't really fond of slapstick. But then Over the Hedge turned out to be full of really funny slapstick.

Good cast, too: Bruce Willis, William Shatner, Nick Nolte, Alison Janney, Eugene Levy. Plus others I haven't seen as much of (Garry Shandling, Steve Carell, Wanda Sykes, Avril Lavigne) who also did a good job.

Anyway, if you're looking for something fun, slight, and family friendly (rated PG "for some rude humor and mild comic action"), you could do much much worse.

You might also try Surf’s Up. Gnerally I’m not a fan of animated movies, but this one surprised me. It’s a mockumentary, clever, funny, with Jeff Bridges, Zooey Deschanel, and that Shia LaBeouf guy.

I saw Surf’s Up in April or so, and I liked it, but I don’t seem to have written anything down about it. I usually take at least some notes on movies I see, so that when they’re mentioned a few months later I’ll have some idea of what I thought at the time, but in this case I apparently neglected to do that. I did find it on a hastily written list of recently watched movies I liked, under a name like “that surfing penguins movie that I can’t think of the name of right now.”

…I had it confused for a while with Happy Feet–the other animated penguin movie, which I also saw fairly recently. I think I should watch Happy Feet again, now that I know what to expect; I went into it with the wrong expectations (like thinking there was going to be surfing in it), and never really meshed with it as a result.
